Oakland Lyric Opera is a professional resident opera company based in Oakland, California. Committed to working with young and local artists, the company presents "Grand Opera" on a less-than-grand scale, including fully-staged and costumed productions with orchestra and chorus (budget permitting), concerts, recitals, opera showcases, a cabaret dinner-opera series, musical theater and corporate entertainment programs.
Marilyn Kosinski founded the company in 1993. Originally called Lyric Opera Theater of Oakland, the company incorporated April 1994 as Oakland Lyric Opera Association.
OLO has presented an eclectic breadth of musical offerings including Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, the musical My Fair Lady, Carl Orff's Die Kluge (The Wise Woman and The King), Puccini's Il Tabarro (The Cloak), and Gianni Schicchi, Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Mozart's The Impressario, Pergoleisi's La Serva Padrona, and a concert presentation of Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier.
Opera Showcase presentations have included selections from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Strauss's Die Fledermaus.
In collaboration with the Oakland Youth Orchestra and conductor Wes Kenney, the Oakland Symphony Chorus and Oakland Lyric Opera vocalists participated in the concert Opera and The Orchestra. The concert featured excerpts from Aida and was performed in the Calvin Simmons Auditorium.
The company continues to seek an affordable permanant home for performances and rehearsals. Performances have been held in community venues including the Performing Arts Theater at Laney College, Scottish Rite Center;s Main Auditorium, the Regents Theater at Holy Names College, the Calvin Simmons Auditorium in the Henry J Kaiser Convention Center, two Jewish synagogues (including Temple Sinai in Oakland), the First Congregational Church of Oakland, and the Lake Merritt Church - United Methodist.
Established education and outreach programs include: The Opera Showcase Series, The Opera Orchestra Training Institute (OTTI), The Young Artists Studio, Oakland Lyric Opera Chorus, Opera in The Schools, and Cabaret Opera.
